“Sex during menstruation is the last taboo”

There are still many taboos remaining about menstruation. That’s why authors Elissa Stein and Susan Kim decided to write a book about the history and taboos surrounding this issue.

Taboos

Stein calls sex during menstruation the last taboo. “It’s a personal choice, many women do it, but if you don’t want to, you certainly shouldn’t.” She had long been too ashamed to talk to her doctor about her menstrual problems and did not want her daughter to grow up with the same feelings. The purpose of her book ‘Flow’ is to get rid of the taboo and shame surrounding this issue by means of better communication. The authors believe that this book is especially important for young women. “Now things are so much easier for girls, but that was certainly not always the case. By sharing the history with them, they will appreciate their own privileged position even more.”

Medication too soon

Since the ’20s, menstruation has been seen as something that women had to try and hide. The authors find that more and more women resort too quickly to medication to suppress their menstrual symptoms. They often use the pill to delay it so they can still can go to sports training or enjoy a romantic weekend with their partner. “Girls should understand that it is not so simple, there are associated health hazards.”
